Gotham FC midfielder Jaedyn Shaw has committed her long-term future to the club, signing a contract extension that will keep her in New Jersey through the 2029 NWSL season, the team announced Thursday. The deal secures one of the league’s brightest young stars and further cements Gotham’s ambitions to build around elite, homegrown American talent.
At just 20 years old, Shaw has already made a major impact on both the domestic and international stage. She joined the Bats in September from the North Carolina Courage in a record-setting $1.25 million intraleague transfer, the largest transfer fee ever exchanged between two NWSL clubs. The move was widely seen as a statement of intent from Gotham FC, signaling their belief in Shaw as a player capable of defining the club’s future.
Shaw made an immediate impact in her Gotham debut on Sept. 12, finding the back of the net in a 2–0 win over the San Diego Wave, the club where she launched her professional career at just 17. The goal made her the fifth player in NWSL history to score in a debut for two different teams, a testament to her flair for performing on the biggest stages.
“I’m so excited to continue to give my all for this incredible club and our amazing fans,” Shaw said. “I’m grateful to call this place home for the years ahead.”
Since arriving at Gotham, Shaw has appeared in nine matches across all competitions, starting seven. She’s contributed one goal and one assist while quickly becoming an integral part of the team’s midfield, bringing composure, creativity, and technical precision that have already earned praise from teammates and coaches alike.
“Jaedyn has already demonstrated her incredible quality in the short time she’s been with us,” said Yael Averbuch West, Gotham FC’s general manager and head of soccer operations. “We’re thrilled to keep her at Gotham and look forward to watching her continue to thrive and make an impact with our club.”
Prior to her move, Shaw played 19 matches for North Carolina this season, starting 10 and notching three goals and one assist. Her steady progression has already placed her in the NWSL record books as the youngest player to reach 15 career goals, surpassing Alyssa Thompson’s previous mark. Her ability to combine scoring instincts with playmaking vision has made her one of the most well-rounded attacking midfielders in the league.
Internationally, Shaw’s résumé is equally impressive. A regular with the U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT), she helped the United States capture gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics and was named the Golden Ball winner, awarded to the tournament’s top player, at the inaugural Concacaf W Gold Cup earlier that year. Her performances on the world stage have established her as a central figure in the U.S. program’s next generation.
Shaw’s extension represents more than just a long-term deal; it’s a reflection of Gotham FC’s evolution into one of the NWSL’s most forward-thinking clubs. With Shaw as a cornerstone, the team has built a strong foundation that balances championship-winning experience with rising young talent. Her creativity and composure in midfield have brought another layer of control and flair to Gotham’s attack, while her maturity and leadership continue to grow with each appearance.
For Shaw, the new contract marks the next step in a journey defined by rapid growth and relentless ambition. From her breakout at 17 years old with San Diego to her record-setting transfer and international success, she’s consistently proven herself ready for the spotlight. Now, with her future secured, she’s positioned not only to elevate Gotham FC but also to help shape the next era of the NWSL.
Gotham’s investment in Shaw is an investment in continuity and excellence. Her presence ensures that the club’s attacking identity will remain dynamic and unpredictable, while her connection with fans continues to strengthen the bond between the team and its growing supporter base. As the club looks to build on recent success, Shaw stands at the heart of that vision; a symbol of talent, belief, and the bright future Gotham FC is determined to create.
