SAN DIEGO — Gotham FC’s late-summer surge gathered more steam Friday night with a 2-0 victory over the San Diego Wave at Snapdragon Stadium, powered by goals from Esther González and debutant Jaedyn Shaw.
González put Gotham in front on the cusp of halftime, punishing a defensive lapse for her league-leading 13th goal of the season. San Diego defender Kennedy Wesley’s back pass placed goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan under pressure, allowing Gotham forward Geyse to intervene. The loose ball fell to González, who slotted calmly into the open net from distance. The Spanish international has now scored 11 of her 13 goals in the first half, one shy of tying the NWSL single-season record for most first-half goals.
Shaw doubled the lead in the 79th minute, just 30 minutes into her Gotham debut. The 20-year-old midfielder, who joined from North Carolina on Thursday, redirected Jaelin Howell’s driven cross with a glancing header inside the left post. The strike marked Shaw’s fourth of the season and her second career debut goal, making her just the fifth player in league history to accomplish that feat. She has now scored against 11 of the league’s 14 active clubs.
The win was Gotham’s third straight — including road victories over San Diego and reigning champion Orlando Pride — and pushed the club to (8-6-6, 30 points) with six matches left. Just two weeks ago, Gotham sat on the playoff line; now, it has climbed into firm contention. Gotham is (5-1-3), with 18 points from a possible 27.
Goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger recorded her eighth clean sheet of the season, tying the club record she already shares with Brittany Cameron. It was Gotham’s ninth clean sheet overall, matching the club’s single-season mark.
The result also avenged Gotham’s home defeat to the Wave in May and underscored the team’s sharp run of form since mid-June, when head coach Juan Carlos Amorós’s side began a stretch that has transformed the postseason picture.
Jaedyn Shaw on the win and her debut goal
“Obviously, we grinded out three points, and I’m grateful to get a goal,” Shaw said. “I think we have an even better performance in us, but I’m grateful to make my debut for Gotham. I’m really excited to keep playing with such amazing players and to continue on with the season.”
Ann-Katrin Berger on the road win
“These are really important points for us because they move us higher up the table, and we’re happy about that,” Berger said. “But, as [Jaedyn] said, we know we can do better and we have to do better, especially with the games coming up against different teams.
“We make it harder on ourselves when we don’t keep possession the way we want to, and that leaves us defending for 70 minutes of the game. That’s an area where we need to improve. Still, the three points were really important today.”
Juan Carlos Amorós on Gotham’s turnaround
“I have a fantastic staff that gives everything, and the players are giving 200 percent. Even in the most difficult moments, they’ve stayed united, kept pushing together, and kept working hard. That’s been our key,” Amorós said. “Winning three straight matches in this league, given how competitive it is right now, is very difficult. We’re also close to breaking the clean sheet record again. We’re very happy with the work of the entire team.”
Riding a three-match winning streak and one of the league’s hottest runs of form, Gotham shifts to Concacaf W Champions Cup play against Vancouver Rise FC Academy before resuming NWSL action on the road at Bay FC.
