Gotham FC Heads West for Key Clash Against San Diego Wave

By David Macaulay-Smith

Gotham FC visits the San Diego Wave on Friday night in a clash with major playoff implications as the NWSL regular season enters its final stretch. Only three points separate the clubs, with the Wave in third place and Gotham holding onto sixth.

Gotham (7-6-6, 27 points) enters the match in form after a 3-1 win over Angel City last weekend. Gabi Portilho, Rose Lavelle, and Jaelin Howell provided the goals in that victory, which boosted Gotham’s playoff push. Head coach Juan Carlos Amorós has his side organized in a 4-3-3 that emphasizes compact defensive shape and sharp transition play.

Esther González leads the league with 12 goals and serves as the centerpiece of Gotham’s attack, while Lavelle and rookie Sarah Schupansky provide creativity in support. Schupansky is tied for the league lead with five assists, and Howell has added a scoring touch from midfield with three goals in her last seven matches. Gotham has conceded only 17 goals this season, one of the lowest totals in the league, giving them confidence in tight contests.

San Diego (8-6-5, 30 points) is looking to rebound from a 3-0 loss to Houston in its last outing. The Wave dominated possession with 68 percent of the ball and 19 shots, but were undone by defensive lapses and missed opportunities in front of goal. Head coach Jonas Eidevall has emphasized a structured possession game built on controlling the ball, stretching opponents with width, and pressing aggressively to regain possession.

Adriana Leon and Kimmi Ascanio have each scored four goals to lead the team, while Delphine Cascarino has been a two-way threat with five assists and three goals. Eidevall’s approach has made the Wave one of the league’s most possession-oriented teams, though lapses at both ends of the field have occasionally cost them points.

San Diego won the first meeting between these two teams back in May, a 1-0 result sealed by an Ascanio goal. With the playoff race still unsettled, Friday’s rematch could prove pivotal in determining postseason seeding. A Gotham win would pull them level on points with San Diego, while a Wave victory would strengthen their bid for a top-four finish and a home playoff match.
