Gotham FC Looks to Respond Against Orlando Pride in Homestand Finale

By David Macaulay-Smith

Gotham FC closes out its three-match homestand on Sunday night, hosting the Orlando Pride at Sports Illustrated Stadium in a rematch of last season’s NWSL Semifinals.

Gotham (1-1-1, 4 points) enters the match looking to respond after a 2-0 loss to expansion side Denver Summit FC on Wednesday. The result marked the club’s first defeat of the 2026 season and the first time it conceded after opening the campaign with back-to-back clean sheets. While the defensive foundation had been solid early on, the midweek performance exposed the need for sharper execution, particularly in the attacking third.

That has become a clear focus heading into Sunday.

“Mainly goal production,” Jaelin Howell said. “That’s been our focus and something we know we need to improve. It’s still early, but we need to start scoring goals.”

The challenge does not get any easier against an Orlando side coming off its most complete performance of the season. The Pride (1-1-1, 4 points) defeated Chicago Stars FC 3-0 on Wednesday, with Barbra Banda continuing her strong start by scoring in her third straight match. Jacquie Ovalle also made an impact, contributing a goal and an assist in the win.

“They have a very strong front line,” Howell said. “We’ll need to handle that and be sharp defensively.”

Sunday’s matchup is the first meeting between the two clubs since Gotham’s dramatic semifinal victory in 2025, when Jaedyn Shaw scored a stoppage-time winner to send the team to the championship. Shaw will be unavailable for this match due to a hamstring injury, one of several absences Gotham must manage.

Bruninha (hamstring) and Mandy Freeman (lower leg) have both been ruled out, while Taryn Torres remains sidelined with a season-ending knee injury. Guro Reiten is also not expected to be available due to ongoing issues with her visa with Juan Carlos Amorós saying “we are waiting for the final details and the club is working hard behind the scenes.”

Orlando also enters the match dealing with multiple absences. Kerry Abello (hip), Zara Chavoshi (lower leg), Cosette Morche (ankle), Kylie Nadaner (maternity leave), Nicole Payne (knee) and Viviana Villacorta (knee) are all unavailable. Defender Rafaelle is listed as questionable with a thigh injury.

Despite the injuries on both sides, Amorós emphasized the opportunity that comes with a quick turnaround.

“It’s good that we have another game quickly,” Amorós said. “We’re not happy with our performance, and this is a chance to respond in front of our fans.”

He also acknowledged the test Orlando presents.

“They’re coming off a strong result and are a very good team,” Amorós said. “We know them well, but we still need to be sharp in every detail.”

For Gotham, the objective is straightforward. Reestablish its defensive organization while finding a cutting edge in front of goal. Against an Orlando team gaining confidence in attack, execution in both boxes will likely determine the outcome.

As the homestand comes to an end, Gotham has an opportunity to reset and build momentum before heading back on the road.
