Decision Day Showdown: Gotham FC Seeks Top-Four Finish Against North Carolina Courage

By David Macaulay-Smith

Everything comes down to Sunday for Gotham FC. The Bats close out the regular season on the road against the North Carolina Courage, with a chance to secure a top-four finish and a home playoff match still in play. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. ET at WakeMed Soccer Park.

Gotham FC (9-7-9, 36 points) enters the final weekend in seventh place but remains part of a tightly packed playoff race. A win in Cary, combined with favorable results elsewhere, could see the club finish as high as fourth, the final position that guarantees a home quarterfinal. Sunday’s result will also determine Gotham’s first-round opponent as the NWSL postseason field is finalized.

Gotham officially secured its third straight playoff berth in Week 25 following a 2-2 draw against Racing Louisville FC, extending the longest postseason streak in club history. Goals from Jaelin Howell and Rose Lavelle sealed the vital point, which also matched Gotham’s second-highest regular-season point total (36), first recorded in 2013.

It has been a season defined by persistence and growth. After earning just 12 points through the first 11 matches, Gotham found its rhythm midway through the year, collecting 24 points from the next 14, the second-most in the league during that stretch. The turnaround has reflected a group that has grown stronger and more cohesive as the season has progressed.

Defensively, Gotham has relied on stability and consistency. Emily Sonnett and Lilly Reale have both featured in all 25 regular-season matches this year, anchoring a back line that has helped make Gotham one of the league’s toughest teams to beat. If both play on Sunday, they will join Delanie Sheehan and Jenna Nighswonger as the only Gotham players ever to appear in every match of a 26-game campaign.

The Courage (8-9-8, 32 points) enter Decision Day fighting to stay alive in the postseason race. Sitting ninth, two points below the playoff line, North Carolina must win and hope Racing Louisville draws or loses to advance. They ended a three-match winless streak in Week 25 with a 3-0 victory over Bay FC, highlighted by a hat trick from 20-year-old Manaka Matsukubo, the first of her career.

Sunday’s meeting will be the 27th all-time between the two sides. The Courage hold a 12-9-5 advantage overall, but Gotham has lost just once in their last eight meetings across all competitions. Since the start of 2023, Gotham has won five of those eight matchups (5-1-2), including back-to-back victories.

The clubs last met on April 13 at Sports Illustrated Stadium, where Gotham earned its first win of the season, a 3-1 result powered by a brace from Esther González and Reale’s first professional goal.

HEAD COACH JUAN CARLOS AMORÓS

On tomorrow’s match against North Carolina:

“The first is obviously a fantastic game tomorrow here in North Carolina. There’s going to be a fantastic atmosphere that’s going to prepare us really well for next week with the playoffs. They’ve got a sold-out crowd, so congrats to them. That’s something we all love to see, whether it is on our ground or somewhere else. That’s something we’re very excited about.”

Thoughts on Decision Day:

“I’ve been in the league now for a few years. I’ve seen both sides, and this is definitely how it should be. Teams not having competitive advantages, knowing what they need to do and the excitement of keeping an eye on what’s happening everywhere for the fans is something very special. Knowing how this league is and how tight everything is, it’s clever to arrange it like that at the beginning of the year because there is always something to play for on this last fixture and it’s a lot of work that going into the year, and sometimes it can feel that it can be jeopardized if a team already knows that maybe instead of winning needs a draw, situations like that. I think it is definitely something very positive from the league and they’ve done a great job.”

DEFENDER JESS CARTER

On facing North Carolina on Decision Day and the expected atmosphere:

“I’m really excited. I haven’t played North Carolina yet, so I’m not sure what to expect from the crowd, to be honest. With it being Decision Day, I’m hoping the fans come out – whether it’s for us or against us – because it helps create a really exciting environment. I’m expecting a big challenge. North Carolina is a great team and will be tough to beat. There’s a lot on the line for them, so I’m just hoping for a really good, exciting and feisty game.”

On how she approaches Decision Day with other results around the league impacting Gotham’s position:

“The focus has to be on us doing our job. We’re not going to get complacent just because we’ve already clinched. We want to finish as high in the table as possible and try to get that home playoff spot – that’s really key for us. It’s not about focusing on the occasion; it’s about focusing on our basics and doing what we need to do to pick up three points tomorrow.”

Gotham has also been one of the league’s strongest sides on the road, losing just once away from home in all competitions since May 9. That form has been key to their rise up the table and could prove decisive again on Sunday as they look to close the regular season on a high note.

With a top-four finish still within reach, Gotham enters Decision Day knowing the stakes couldn’t be higher. A strong performance in Cary would not only secure a home playoff match but also give the team momentum and confidence heading into the postseason, where every point, every play, and every moment matters. This is the final chance to set the tone — and the Bats are ready to make it count.
