Gotham FC returns to action Wednesday evening as it continues its three-match homestand, hosting expansion side Denver Summit FC at Sports Illustrated Stadium in the first meeting between the clubs.

Gotham (1-0-1, 4 points) is one of five teams unbeaten through the opening two weeks of the 2026 NWSL season. The club opened its campaign with a 1-0 road win over fellow expansion side Boston Legacy FC on March 14, with Esther González scoring the winning goal. The Bats followed that performance with a scoreless draw against the North Carolina Courage in its home opener, where they controlled the majority of possession and created several chances but were unable to find the back of the net, while goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger made key saves to preserve the clean sheet.

Through two matches, Gotham has established itself defensively, joining just the Houston Dash and Portland Thorns as the only teams in the league yet to concede a goal.

Denver Summit FC (0-1-1, 1 point) enters the matchup after earning the first point in club history with a 1-1 draw against the Orlando Pride on Friday. German forward Melissa Kössler scored Denver’s first goal in the 24th minute before Orlando equalized in the second half.

Wednesday’s contest marks Gotham’s second meeting with an expansion team in its first three matches and presents a different challenge against an opponent still defining its identity.

During the pre-match press conference, head coach Juan Carlos Amorós emphasized that Gotham must be more decisive in the final third after showing improved control in possession during its home opener.

“In the first game, we did not have the ball as much as we wanted. In this one, we did, Amorós said. In terms of breaking line passes, we were second in the league this week, but we took too many passes to break those lines. We need to recognize those moments earlier when we have already unbalanced the opposition and create more chances from that.”

Amorós also noted that defenders Bruninha and Mandy Freeman are still working their way back from injury and will need more time before returning.

“They’re still going to need a little bit more time, but we’ll see when they can come back and help, hopefully sooner rather than later.”

Forward Katie Lampson said in the pre-match press conference that facing an expansion side early in the season requires adaptability because limited film is available to study.

“An expansion team early in the season is always a bit of a crapshoot, Lampson said. You do not know what the team will be like because everyone is still finding their identity. With Denver, there is not much information, so we piece things together. They have the advantage of being unknown.”

Lampson added that the situation has sharpened Gotham’s focus heading into the matchup.

“It is exciting for us, Lampson said. It challenges us to adapt, respond and play our style no matter what they bring.”

Gotham FC will be without Bruninha (hamstring), Freeman (lower leg), Jaedyn Shaw (hamstring) and Taryn Torres (ACL recovery, SEI), while Denver Summit FC will be without Jasmine Aikey (knee, SEI), Jordan Baggett (maternity leave) and Camryn Biegalski (knee).

With a solid defensive foundation and an unbeaten start to build on, Gotham will aim to turn its control of the game into tangible results, challenge Denver Summit’s unknown strengths, and set the tone for the remainder of its homestand. Success Wednesday could give the Bats early-season momentum and reinforce their status as one of the league’s most disciplined and adaptable teams.
