Gotham, Portland Set for Crucial Late-Season Match

By David Macaulay-Smith

Gotham FC and the Portland Thorns meet Friday night at Sports Illustrated Stadium in a pivotal Week 22 match with playoff implications. Both sides enter with identical (8-6-7) records and 31 points, with the Bats holding third place on goal differential and Portland in fourth. With just three points separating third from eighth in the NWSL table, every match carries added weight as the regular season nears its close. The top eight teams reach the playoffs, while the top four earn the right to host in the opening round.

Gotham is unbeaten in eight straight across all competitions, including a (3-0-2) stretch in league play. The club closed a three-game West Coast swing with a 1-1 draw at Bay FC on Sunday, as Rose Lavelle scored her second goal of the season and Esther González registered her first league assist of 2025. González now has 14 goal contributions in the regular season, continuing to establish herself as one of the NWSL’s most reliable attackers. Gotham has also never lost a league match when González records an assist (4-0-1), underlining her decisive impact.

Portland, meanwhile, has found points harder to come by, posting one win, two losses and two draws in its last five league matches. The Thorns most recently earned a 1-1 draw against San Diego, with defender Reyna Reyes salvaging a result with an 86th-minute equalizer. Despite uneven results, Portland remains a dangerous opponent, blending veteran leadership with young talent. Their ability to produce late goals has kept them competitive, but improved consistency will be key if they want to stay in the top four.

Friday will mark the 33rd all-time meeting between the clubs, with Portland holding a narrow (13-11-8) advantage. Gotham, however, has won five of the last seven, including playoff eliminations of the Thorns in both 2023 and 2024. Last season’s quarterfinal was decided by Lavelle’s late strike in stoppage time, the third-latest regulation playoff goal in NWSL history at 96:14. At home, Gotham owns a (5-5-4) record against Portland and will aim to tilt that mark in its favor.

Both clubs enter Friday’s clash with much at stake. A Gotham victory would strengthen its grip on a top-four position, while a Thorns win would see them leapfrog their rivals into third. With playoff seeding on the line and a rivalry already rich with postseason history, the stage is set for one of the most consequential fixtures of the NWSL weekend.
