PACHUCA — Gotham FC’s hopes of defending its continental title came to an end Wednesday night after a 4-1 semifinal defeat to Club América Femenil in the 2025-26 Concacaf W Champions Cup at Estadio Hidalgo.

Former Gotham forward Geyse played a major role in América’s attacking display, assisting three goals, while Scarlett Camberos scored a hat trick to send the Liga MX Femenil champions into Saturday’s final. Esther González scored Gotham FC’s lone goal as the reigning champions saw their tournament run come to an end.

“Very, very difficult game for us,” Gotham FC head coach Juan Carlos Amorós said postgame. “I have to give a lot of credit to my players. They gave absolutely everything they had in those conditions.”

América opened the scoring in the 21st minute after building down the right flank. Geyse controlled the ball near the endline before delivering a low cross into the box, where Camberos arrived to finish first time and give the Mexican side a 1-0 lead.

The night became more concerning for Gotham just before halftime when goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger was forced off following a collision inside the penalty area during stoppage time. Berger received lengthy medical attention before leaving the field on a stretcher, with Shelby Hogan replacing her after halftime.

“It was very difficult for us, knowing that Ann had to go to the hospital after that challenge in the first half,” Amorós said. “Credit to my players. They gave absolutely everything.”

Gotham responded immediately after the break and nearly found an equalizer in the 46th minute when González forced a save before the rebound was cleared away.

Moments later, Gotham found its breakthrough.

Jaedyn Shaw split the América defense with a through ball in the 48th minute, sending González through on goal. The Spanish striker calmly finished into the far corner to level the match at 1-1 and briefly shift momentum in Gotham’s favor.

But América quickly regained control.

In the 57th minute, Geyse again created the opportunity for Camberos, whose finish across goal restored América’s lead. The Liga MX Femenil champions added a third in the 70th minute when a loose clearance fell back to Geyse near the goal line before she squared a pass for substitute Aylin Avilez to tap home from close range.

Camberos completed her hat trick in the 89th minute from the penalty spot after América earned a late penalty, sealing the 4-1 victory and a place in Saturday’s championship match.

Despite the defeat, Amorós acknowledged the difficulty of the competition and praised América’s performance.

“Across these two tournaments, we’ve been one of the most consistent teams along with América, who are now in the final,” Amorós said. “It’s a very difficult competition, and today we got the side of the coin that we didn’t want.”

The defeat marked Gotham FC’s first loss in Concacaf W Champions Cup play and the club’s first-ever defeat against Liga MX Femenil opposition.

Gotham FC will now prepare for Saturday’s third-place match, where the club will face Pachuca Femenil.
