Gotham FC Eyes Fourth Straight Win in Home Clash With Boston Legacy FC

By David Macaulay-Smith
Gotham FC returns to Sports Illustrated Stadium on Saturday looking to extend its winning run to four matches as it hosts Boston Legacy FC in the first-ever meeting between the clubs in New Jersey. The match concludes Gotham’s two-game homestand and offers another opportunity for the Bats to continue their strong early-season momentum.

The sides already met once this season on opening day, when Gotham claimed a 1-0 victory at Gillette Stadium behind an Esther González strike. Since then, Gotham has continued to establish itself as one of the NWSL’s top contenders, entering the weekend with a 4-2-2 record and 14 points, good for fourth place in the league standings. Boston, meanwhile, sits 16th with a 1-5-1 record heading into the matchup.

Defensively, Gotham has been one of the league’s standout teams, conceding the fewest goals in the NWSL while posting clean sheets in each of its last three victories. That run continued last weekend with a 1-0 win over Racing Louisville FC, as Jaedyn Shaw scored the decisive goal in the 16th minute from a Jordynn Dudley assist. Dudley, recently named NWSL Rookie of the Month for April, now has two assists on the season and has made an immediate impact in her first professional campaign.

Boston Legacy FC arrives with renewed confidence after earning the first win in club history, a dramatic 3-2 result over fellow expansion club Denver Summit FC. Bianca St-Georges delivered the breakthrough moment with a stoppage-time winner, giving Boston momentum heading into its second meeting with Gotham.

Lead assistant coach Shaun Harris expects another demanding contest after the tightly contested opener between the teams.

“It’ll be a similar game to last time,” Harris said. “They’re a physical, tough opponent to break down and press aggressively. They’re going to make us work the finer spaces, and it’s about how we implement our style early on and continue the fast starts we’ve been having.”

The coaching staff believes Gotham’s ability to control the tempo will be key to breaking Boston’s pressure.

“We want to dictate the tempo, manage the game and find those pockets where we can disjoint their press and exploit spaces,” Harris explained. “It’ll be a physical game, but we’ll be ready for the challenge. It’s about asserting our dominance as early as possible.”

Boston’s defensive shape will also be a point of emphasis, but Gotham’s preparation centers more on controlling areas of the field than reacting to formations.

“It’s about not giving them the time and space to dictate where they want to play,” Harris noted. “We want to make their build predictable and force them into areas favorable for us.”

“Whether it’s a back three or back four, we focus more on the spaces players occupy than the formation itself,” he added. “The goal is to be aggressive, stop them from playing into their preferred areas and regain the ball as high up the pitch as possible.”

There was also an update on defender Tierna Davidson’s recovery and her progress toward being ready to handle a full 90 minutes.

“She’s progressing week by week, and we’re really happy with where she’s at,” Harris said. “It’s about checking in with her daily, seeing how she feels and building toward full 90-minute fitness. The medical team is pleased with her progress, and she’s moving in the right direction.”

Defender Jess Carter said Gotham is expecting a more polished Boston side than the one it faced on opening weekend.

“We’re always excited for a home game,” Carter said. “I’m glad to be back on the pitch and playing again.”

“Playing Boston the first time around, it was their first game, so this will be a slightly different team,” Carter continued. “They got that first game out of the way and recently had a great win.”

“It’s going to be a really competitive game,” Carter added. “If the last game was anything to go by, it might be a feisty and competitive one, so it’s one we’re excited for.”

With confidence high, the league’s best defense in form, and home support behind them, Gotham FC will aim to continue its surge up the standings against an improving Boston side eager to build on its historic first victory.
